Artists in Early Parenthood : How Your Life is Shaped by External Forces will be on  Friday, January 18, 2019 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm.

Artists in Early Parenthood : How Your Life is Shaped by External Forces is a panel discussion led by four mothers--Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann, Chelsea Ragan, Lee Nowell-Wilson, and Ty Williams. How is your life shaped by external forces? This panel will discuss the advantages and challenges that parents of young children and their families face in the artworld.  Together we will explore the maternal creative instinct, balance of studio practice, family support and the life altering perspective change of having a child. All seasoned artist parents, supportive partners and curious ears welcome. 


Panelists:

Katherine Mann received her BA from Brown University and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art.  She is the recipient of a Fulbright grant to Taiwan, the AIR Gallery and Lower East Side Printshop Keyholder Fellowships in New York, NY, and the Individual Artist Grant, Arts and Humanities Grant, Mayor’s Award and Hamiltonian Fellowship in Washington, DC.   She has attended residencies at Mass MoCA, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Blue Sky Dayton, Vermont Studio Center, Salzburg Kunstlerhauss, Triangle Workshop, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Bemis Center for the Arts, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Facebook, and the Jaipur, India Carbon 12 Residency. Some of the venues where Mann has shown her work include the Walters Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Rawls Museum, the US consulate in Dubai, UAE, and the US embassy in Yaounde, Cameroon.  Mann is an instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Chelsea Ragan is a multidisciplinary artist, mother, wife, DIY organizer and curator based in Black Mountain, NC. She is passionate about redefining outsider/folk art for the 21 century, Artist vs. Motherhood relationship and art made in the American South. Chelsea Ragan has an MFA from Mount Royal School of Art at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012 and BFA in Painting from University of Georgia in 2006.  Chelsea has co-founder of many art projects such as Cut in the Fence, Vagrant Space, and most notably School of the Alternative. Her collaborative work as been featured in Art in America, Artforum, Artsy, Temporary Art Review, and Artribune. She has received grants and fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, Launching Art in Baltimore and Maryland Institute College of Art Travel Grant.

Ty Williams is a counselor and former educator living and working in Baltimore, MD.

Lee Nowell-Wilson is a representational figurative artist, living and working in Baltimore, MD. Through large scale drawings and paintings, Nowell-Wilson’s work explores weight, movement and maternal elements within the wrestling interaction of human relationship. Nowell-Wilson earned her BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011. She has participated in artist residencies with Creative Paradox in Annapolis, MD, and the Street Art School in Lyon, France. Her work has exhibited in Annapolis, New York City, Italy and France, and she recently held a solo show at Project 1628 in Baltimore, MD. Traveling with her husband, Nowell-Wilson has completed murals + urban art pieces in Norway, France, Northern Ireland and Chile. In 2018, Nowell-Wilson was also featured in Maker’s Magazine, Bmore Art, and the online blog “Both Mother and Artist”, showcasing and discussing her work created since giving birth to her daughter.
